On average, every fifth four-year-old has an undiscovered defect of vision. This is caused by an insufficient development of the visual apparatus. In contrast to other diseases, defects of vision do not show outwardly and most of the time, the children who are affected do not notice it themselves.
With the help of sight screening, defects of vision can be recognized and treated at an early stage, thus preventing permanent defects (Amblyopy).
We recommend for the first screening to be done in the first year of the child’s life. Further screenings at regular intervals are advised because new defects can occur at any time while the child is still growing.
The German legislature does not mandate opthalmologic prophylactic examinations. Therefore these screenings are not covered by public health insurance. They are a direct-payer service.
